The Board of Regents is comprised of 5 men and 4 women.there are
5 Republicans and 4 Democrats on the Board. I would remind everyone that the Regent who raised the questions about MM's contract was Jack Kroll, a male.

This topic could get very long and involved, but in my opinion, I don't see the culture at CU as being "anti-male" ( whatever that would mean) or "anti Christian" ( whatever that would mean), or even "anti-sports." I think what you mean by "anti-sports" is that there are academics who feel that their own departments are very underfunded and in financial need, at a time when priority is given to football funding.
MM is the highest paid member of the faculty ( I think) and of course, other faculty members who feel they do more work with much less funding will be concerned and will chat w/ the Regents about the disparity in compensation. This argument about a university being overly focused on football has been going on a long, long time and won't be resolved any time soon. JMO -- B4E

I'll explain
How does a school culture like say OU or Florida State (just two in many examples)view it's football team compared to Boulder?

The phony scandal from 2001 that took CU down would have been swept under the rug so quickly nobody would even be talking about it at these football schools. Even their REAL scandals don't hurt them for very long. Instead, it took CU football down for 15 years. The athletes have enemies from their own community that are far more dangerous to their success than any opponent they'll face on the field of play. They don't want CU just to lose. They want them gone. That's the toxic culture.

Re: Thanks. I see/feel anti-sports. I get that. Not sure about male, Christians
CU tries to keep it quiet, but the same people who hate sports generally hate Christians, too. I am not quite sure why the two would be related in that way.

Going the other way, there are also people at CU who hate Christians but like sports. So this is not an "if and only if" deal.

There are documented cases of CU getting rid of Christian professors simply because it doesn't like what they believe. I could name an award-winning history prof and a distinguished classics prof who got the broom because of their faith.

I'll take a stab at it
Just about every university deals with this to some extent, but I would submit CU presents bigger challenges in this area than most aspiring football powers. (And whether CU is really aspiring to be a football power is another debate.)

Anyway, the toxic culture is a group of academics who are "anti" certain things. They are anti-sports. They are anti-male. And they are anti-Christian.

When you have a successful coach like McCartney or (at least last year) MacIntyre, that's 3-for-3 on the above list. And the "anti" people are apoplectic. At CU, the "anti" people carry more clout than they do just about anywhere else that has a prominent football team.

There. I said it.

Rough couple of days for former Rockies starting pitchers
On Monday, Ubaldo Jimenez blew a 5-0 lead for the Orioles, giving up six earned runs in four innings. He wasn't the pitcher of record, but the birds went on to lose 14-7 to the Twins.

On Tuesday, Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin lasted just 2/3 of an inning against the Mets, allowing seven earned runs.

And, this just in Tuesday: Mariners starter Christian Bergman got lit up for 10 earned runs in four innings by the Nationals.

I think the Rockies like their young guns better than those guys.

Hoffman was great. Sent back to AAA today. Something has to give!
The Tylers better step it up....

Jon Gray 3 weeks out. Gray, Chatwood, Freeland, Marquez, Hoffman/Senzatela

Maybe Anderson can replace Lyles as a long reliever.

I've heard he'll be a Reggie Bush-type of weapon
McAffrey is pretty versatile. He'll likely be used to run the ball and catch short passes. Could be a return guy, too. That's what the sports radio hacks are saying.

IMO he's not a premier 25-carry RB. He's a helluva athlete so they'll find ways to get the ball in his hands. He'll discover that the athletes on NFL defenses are way better than college.

Before PC
they were mediocre even with all that "talent". Pete is gone and I think the door is open. I don't see this as a 20 year project. I think we have made great strides in the skilled positions. The big area is upfront IMO. I thought we got pushed around at SC. But the last two games have been really close. So I am saying its closer than you think. Time will tell. Someone hand Bob a tissue.

Totally agree...
Nebraska was good in the 70s with a "regular" college offense. They had some good passers in those days. Osborne and Mac ran the offense they needed to run to be successful. Personally, I was ecstatic when they fired Solich and hired Bill Callahan. It signaled the end of Husker dominance.

USC has it made. A trained chimp could keep them in the Top 10.

Christian McAffrey, White Running Backs in the NFL
I just can't get my mind wrapped around McCaffrey being a number 1 pick as a running back. How much of it do you think is simply the stigma about white running backs? Is that a legitimate concern? Let's be honest, how many great ones have their been in the last 25 years in the NFL?

What is different about McCaffrey that he can beat the odds? He definitely seems to have the physique for it and had the speed and moves, but can you ever seem him being a great one in the NFL? It would be very unusual. Who does he compare most to? Will he play somewhat of a different role as more of versatile back/receiver? Or, can he truly be a premier, featured running back getting 25-30 carries a game? Worth the #1 pick? Risk or not?

What are your thoughts?

If you're school is not the college hotbed region you need that niche.
Option football was Nebraska's niche and they beat numerous teams with superior talent with it for a long time. CU did the same thing for a while and McCartney unwittingly changed to WCO just two years after I heard him tell Irv and Joe on the radio all of the right reasons for sticking with the option.

Look. I started this thread and ..
You have jumped to conclusions about Kev's intentions and you are wrong. The argument is making the comparison of the two situations, not whether or not CU should have championship aspirations. The hostility on this board almost always is a result of misunderstandings and assumptions about people's intentions that are not true.

Hoffman was impressive........
From what I have read on him is that he needed to work on his disception of pitches. He was telegraphing his pitches earlier in his career and therefore batters and coaches were making good calls on what was coming. His stuff looked nasty last night. The breaking pitches rolled off the table as they passed the plate and his fast ball was in good command of location. We have to remember that he was drafted in the first round by the Blue Jays even though he had arm issues. If he hadn't had arm issues they said he was a top three pick in the draft that year. With Tommy John the year after the surgery is one of just trying to get a rhythm. The second year is, if the surgery is successful, one of great anticipation. I'll be watching him because he's a #1 in the rotation type of guy. You bring back Gray at #1 and fill in with Freeland, Chatwood, Bettis, Marquez, and a Maddox like Saltamachia (sp) and watch out. Can you imagine the league looking at the Rockies, and they are taking notice big time, and them talking about the pitching staff over the hitting lineup? This should be fun...............but it is early yet right! Bud Black should take a lot of the credit along with his staff, but Birdich has been in the background being patient and hats off to him.

A-Fan: Opinions aren't complaints.
A complaint would be if we went to the regents, coaches, president, etc., and griped about the culture, seating, concessions, play-calling, or any number of other things. I didn't do that. I voiced an opinion about the culture. Now onto complaints: Do only season ticket holders have a right to complain? The answer depends on whether or not you want the school to listen to new potential season ticket prospects or close their ears and minds and do things the way they've always been done.

I think everyone has a right to both opinions and complaints.

Re: I think what you're saying is that NU cared about the state of CO..
That's part of what I'm saying.

I'm also saying CU/USC right now is totally different than CU/Nebraska in the late 80s and early 90s. Different history. Different conference. Different recruiting dynamic. USC fans don't hate (or care about) CU the way Nebraska did.

Re: Nice hit and run
I believe CU should strive to be the best they can be in all sports. I never said we shouldn't worry about beating SC. Hell, the Buffs almost did it last year.

Comparing CU/USC now to CU/Nebraska over 20 years ago is ridiculous. The circumstances and cfb environment are totally different. We're not even in the same conference now. Not to mention the fact that SC and Nebraska are totally different programs that achieved success in totally different ways. USC has enough talent within 100 miles of their campus to contend for a national championship. Is CU going to steal that talent from under their nose?? I'm not saying CU can't beat them occasionally, but doing it consistently is a whole different story. That's reality.

Which is a truly amazing statistic from Senzatela (six wins), Freeland (five), Marquez (two) and Hoffman (two). That is the single biggest reason this team is doing what it has so far.

OK, you got me - here's my brief take on CU Hoops 2017-18
Honestly speaking, the last two seasons have been hard to watch. Hopefully things will get better now with an infusion of young talent.

1) Watching on TV, it seems like most teams in the league have equal or superior athletes at every position on the floor. Boyle really recruited some marginal players in recent years. That has to change (and hopefully it has already), or Boyle could (and I never thought I would say this) be looking for another job.

2) We need a true PG in the worst way. Very excited about McKinley Wright and what he can bring to the team.

3) George King really needs to have a great senior year in order for us to make noise in the Pac-12. Hopefully he gets his groove back. He did not show improvement as a junior, in my view.

4) Would love to see Dallas Walton break out. He has the size and the skills. Should be bigger and stronger after a redshirt year. Knock on wood his knee is OK.

5) I love all the incoming recruits on film. It will be interesting to see which of them are ready to play as true freshmen.

6) I wish Dom Collier had redshirted. Too late now, so I wish him a strong senior campaign that makes Buff fans proud.

7) At the end of the day, it comes down to the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Boyle has got to raise his game on the recruiting front. Again, I am very excited to see the new players on the court and hope it marks the beginning of a second run of excellence for Tad Boyle at CU. But he e needs to take it farther this time around. Sweet Sixteen or better! No more excuses!

GO BUFFS!!

Conspiracy theorist! But it may have happened

I think the odds were much more favorable for the Lakers at #2 pick this time around.
